The shoebox chronicles

Or, in defense of being unbranded.

I’ve been advised that everyone needs a personal brand. A story that presents a cohesive, consistent story about oneself, preferably accompanied by a curated, 4K social media feed! It’s about making a case for why one is the best, the most passionate, or the most something-or-the-other in their corner of the world. It’s about being memorable and being preceived as an expert, or some such.

But Houston, we have a problem.

I, like most people, am anything but cohesive and consistent. Life happens. The world changes. Sometimes there’s a metamorphosis and sometimes, a vacuum. Like most people, I’m an unfinished picture, a work-in-progess story with rough edges and only a faintly discernable plot. There are both deep insights and incomplete understanding. And there are moments of flow, and the worst kind of ill-timed actions. There is inconsistency and pieces that don’t fit. And all of this is stored fondly, but randomly, like in an old shoebox.

Forcing myself into a single, flat, pre-defined story seems limiting, a pain, and frankly counterproductive.

The solution, I’ve decided, is to unbrand. I offer you my shoebox full of bits and bobs. Construct your own narrative about Manasvini.
